Introduction:
Andres Bonifacio Elementary School come up with a program that will enhance the comprehension and reading capabilities of every learner. A program that will raise awareness of the people in the community. The different organizations both in the public and private sectors, stakeholders, the parents, and all the possible volunteers will come together to help and find self-fulfillment in the world of volunteerism. These volunteers will serve as the volunteer tutor, volunteer reader, book donor, and volunteer support. These actions will result in an increase in the literacy level of learners and with that, Project HANDS was developed.
Furthermore, pursuant to the DepEd Memorandum No. 053, s. 2020 on the Joint Implementing Guidelines for Brigada Eskwela and Oplan Balik Eskwela, Enclosure No. 2 on the Brigada Eskwela Mandated Partnership Activities and Stakeholders’ Engagement under the New Normal, Brigada Pagbasa as part of the Brigada Eskwela, is an after- school reading program that envisions bringing together education partners and experts all learners read and become functionally literate. The Brigada Pagbasa will serve as a platform to synergize efforts and resources to address education- related challenges especially on literacy and numeracy. It will also create opportunities for all stakeholders to contribute to the current gaps in the country’s education system, especially in equipping the learners with 21st century skills.
Project HANDS is a school-initiated project for S.Y. 2021 – 2022 that addresses the literacy gap of learners in all grade levels. This will improve the access to quality education by building a learning environment that is ideal and timely in the current educational situation. Moreover, this project will deepen the school and stakeholders’ partnership for this will bring radical transformation in achieving quality education through digital and non-digital approach in the delivery of learning.
. ABES Project HANDS was done on a regular basis. Every last Wednesday of the month was considered Storytelling Day. Beneficiary students from grade one through grade six together with the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School Book Lover’s Club gathered to listen to and take part in the story telling held at Andres Bonifacio Elementary School Learning Center. Book Lover’s Club from Andres Bonifacio Elementary School take a big part in the program, some of the members from the club volunteer as the storyteller together with the Manila Adventist College volunteers. After the story was told, the volunteers will ask few questions related to the story. After the storytelling, there were other art-related activities. Different volunteers took part in the reading program.
The beneficiaries were so responsive and enthusiastic when they heard any story.
During the implementation of ABES Project HANDS, certificates of appreciation were given to every volunteer storyteller. As part of the Brigada Pagbasa Project HANDS, book donors were also encouraged to donate a book or any reading materials. As a result of the initiative, several books were given to the library.
